The chemical composition of cordierite is 2MgO-Al2O3-5SiO2. Calculating with the percentage of weight, the proportion as below
MgO = 13.8%,
Al2O3 =34.8%
SiO2 = 51.4%
It has very small thermal expansivity, so it is the main material of honeycomb ceramic substrate in catalytic converter. Cordierite material is formed with stable regular hexagon structure of AlSi5O13. The six corners of regular hexagon circle structure is consisted separately with five regular tetrahedron of SiO4, one regular tetrahedron crystal of AlO4. Ideal a-cordierite crystal is formed between regular hexagonal ring structure with regular octahedron of AlO6 and MgO6. A-cordierite crystal has decisive effect to the low thermal expansivity and excellent thermal-shock resistance. The working temperature of cordierite honeycomb ceramic substrate could reach 1300℃ and with its high density honeycomb structure 400CPSI and super thin wall thickness, it has very large surface area, low exhaust resistance, stable chemical property, sharp temperature increase. So it becomes the ideal catalyst carrier.
